First, an important note for everyone to remember:

A few Wikipedians have gotten together to make some suggestions about how we might organize data in articles about Buddhism. These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the below guidelines may be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!

Title

WikiProject Buddhism

Scope

[edit]

This WikiProject aims primarily to promote better coordination, content distribution, and cross-referncing between pages dealing with Buddhism and its sects, texts, terms, philosophies, etc.

Some related WikiProjects are WikiProject Hindu Mythology and...

But: how much should be included here, and how much point to other pages?)
But: needs updating and some more editing

Article Construction

[edit]

Discuss the format for each article based on the WikiProject. Include various categories applicable to the topic.

We should probably discuss article types, which may have different parameters. Example types might be:

  • Biographical material on people
  • Articles on philosophical and doctrinal concepts
  • Articles on texts

Formatting

[edit]

Transliteration

[edit]

Transliterated terms should take advantage of unicode diactrics; for example, "Nirvāṇa". See MSG shortcuts if (a) you don't like wading through a sea of &#...;'s and (b) they haven't switched the English Wiki over to UTF yet. (If either (a) or (b) is untrue, try [[1]].

Of related concern: how to express terms in origin language. (I.e., is it "Skt" or "Sanskrit", etc.)? Priority of languages? (See Talk:Buddhism)

Style tips

[edit]

See Manual of Style

Terminology

[edit]

See Buddhist terms and concepts and post questions, requests for additions, etc. to the talk page there.

Specific features and issues

[edit]
  • [[Zen] has an internal glossary. Should this feature be spread to other articles, or should there be a central glossary, or both?
  • Nagarjuna and Prajnaparamita feature tables comparing translations of texts. Does this feature seem sufficently valuable for us to make a standard of it?

An older experiment:

Buddhism - WikiProject Buddhism
The Four Noble Truths | The Eightfold Path
Terms: | Buddha | Dharma | Sangha | Nirvana | Anatta | klesha
Theravada
Mahayana
Subsect 1 | Subsect 2 | Subsect 3 | Ch'an/Zen
Vajrayana
Texts: Tripitaka | Heart Sutra | Diamond Sutra | The Mūlamadhyamakakārikā | Etc.

Obviously this needs

  • Stylstic fiddling or total overhaul (I had a different version that was vertical, for comparison, but I appear to have completely lost that.)
  • Some of the primary sub-branches of Mah&#257yāna--I'm horrible with details of this nature.
  • What are other key Buddhist terms/concepts that should be included here?
  • What other texts have articles on Wikipedia?
