Title

[edit]

Err, shouldn't this article be at Pearse Station? Admittedly it's a couple of years since I was last in Dublin, but if memory serves, the street outside the station was never renamed from Westland Row. I seem to remember all the station name signs say something like "Staisiun Piarsach/Pearse Station" (apologies for misspellings). -- Arwel 23:56, 8 September 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

I have reverted the title in the introduction to corresspond with the article title, if people disagree then they can submitt a request to change the title. Djegan 19:20, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rationale discussed at Talk:Dublin Heuston railway station. Djegan 11:05, 4 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I still think this is ugly and unneeded. The only reason Iarnród Éireann mention Dublin in conjunction with Pearse, Heuston and Connolly is so that people unfamiliar with the city don't get confused. It is not part of the proper station name, the stations are simply "Pearse Station", "Heuston Station" and "Connolly Station". Adding Dublin to the Wikipedia page titles is not required for disambiguation purposes.
The only reason that we wouldn't simply have "Colbert Station", "Kent Station", etc. for the other main railway stations in Ireland is that these are not the most common names. zoney talk 13:09, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Layout issues

[edit]

I've just added a image to the article and made things worse rather than better. A couple of things I think would improve things, at least short term.

  • 1: Collapsing the route maps by default. I managed to collapse one, the other currently evades me.
  • 2: Implementing an image Gallery. I think that would help at least short term given left justified images are behaving badly and with all the route maps and other non-prose things going on. I would to try this when I have time. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 20:40, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • 3: Also - altering captions to focus on the station NOT the trains. The trains can be fully discussed on their own articles. The date of the photo is more important. Additional details can be added as comments to the image on commons.

Platform Numbering

[edit]

I believe in the 1960s (and probably before and for some time after) the platform numbering south-west to north-east was Platforms 1 & 2 : terminus platforms. Platform 3 is what is currently the northbound through line and Platform 4 what is currently southbound. Platform 5 was the terminus platform to the north-east, it was generally used by boat trains to Dún Laoghaire. Platform 4 (Only?) was used for both arrivals and departures to Galway and Sligo etc until these went to Connolly. Some of this is my memory and I can't currently cite it. Dublin Pearse railway stationPearse railway station"Pearse railway station" - or more usually simply "Pearse station" are far more common than the present name. Cúchullain t/c 16:46, 19 December 2018 (UTC) --Relisting. SITH (talk) 17:31, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If those are not at their WP:COMMONNAMEs, they should be changed too. The fact that other articles are at incorrect titles isn't a reason to do it here.--Cúchullain t/c 15:44, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Per examples above. Sligo Mac Diarmada railway station if shortened to Mac Diarmada railway station is typically unhelpful unless actually in Sligo. Iarnród Éireann are or have been ambiguous in their usage, but http://www.irishrail.ie/train-timetables currently understands Dublin Pearse. Mostly if not every time when I've been on its platforms its been Westland Row. Of relevance here is mainline from Mullingar for a few years prior to terminating an Connolly/Amiens (For Busáras/airport) used to stop there one way ((South)/Eastbound?) only Djm-leighpark (talk) 20:39, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support – I don't see an ambiguity problem here, and sources don't prefix it with Dublin. Dicklyon (talk) 04:16, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Turntable

[edit]

I have seen some mentioned, unconfirmed, the station originally had turntable and single platform as per Harcourt Street. The source also mentioned the through lines were 22" or so too low to go over the road and had to be built up and the platforms a the Westland Row end had to be built up (top the platform edge) and if my memory serves me right (very risky) there was quite an incline from Easons up the the plaform edge, and would be fascinated to know if this is still the case, having no reason to go to Pearse much since the rename. Thankyou.Djm-leighpark (talk) 23:35, 4 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • The clearance height of the road bridge was 16ft, sufficient to clear a standing passenger on top of a tram.
  • The railway had the power to lower the road by 18", but choose to incline Platforms 1 & 2 instead to match the bridge. [[1]]
  • The original terminus station, much smaller than now which ended at Cumberland St., must have had a turntable somewhere, of course the factory had 3, but that came later.

Which century?

[edit]

The precise details of the original 1934 trackwork may be uncertain, but a diagram from 1935.... Should these be 1834 and 1835? JoeBrennan (talk) 22:44, 15 February 2020 (UTC).[reply]

Done: Thanks well spotted please WP:TROUT me. Checking referencing it was plate IX not plate VIII. I might switch this to Harvard referencing at some point.Djm-leighpark (talk) 23:37, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
