What about Smart Tags in the context of software? Eg. http://www.alistapart.com/articles/smarttags/

Smart Tags in the context of software were added to Microsoft Office XP. Smart Tags function like typerlinks, but typically contain several right click menu options which change based upon the context of the text they are associated with. See microsofts take at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP030833041033.aspx Companies implementing Smart Tags include the unusually named Solvation Group http://solvation.biz/services.html Several sites serve as Smart Tag libraries - See www.smarttagcentral.com

Cleaning Up the Article

[edit]

I think that this article could use a good cleaning up and rewrite. I'm looking into starting work on it. SterlingNorth 17:57, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Looking back at the comments above, and seeing a new entry for another "Smart Tag" (the Asian toll system) I guess there should now be a disambuation page... only I don't know how exactly to describe what a software smart tag is. SterlingNorth 05:14, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Original specs of Fastoll

[edit]

The original specifications from the late 1980s of the Fastoll system called for the use of physical transponders that are significantly different from the cigarette-pack sized windshield-mounted devices issued today for use on the DTR/GW. The original transponders were nearly license-plate sized and convex in shape, if I recall correctly. Anyone have any additional information on these? 75.75.91.240 21:04, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Confusing description

[edit]

The word "former" doesn't make sense in this context: "Smart Tag is the former name of a transponder-based electronic toll collection system launched by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as Fastoll on April 15, 1996. It was rebranded as Smart Tag in 1998." Shouldn't that read "current" or "new"? Or is it now called something other than Smart Tag?67.193.139.234 (talk) 00:21, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Virginia retired the brand name Smart-Tag in favor of E-ZPass SterlingNorth (talk) 19:10, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re-Direct to E-ZPass ?

[edit]

I rolled back the re-direct to E-ZPass as it appeared to have been made in good faith, but without discussion and consensus. A better course would be to tag the pages(s) with a merge tag to seek discussion. Just a thought... Geoff T C 17:59, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think from a historical perspective it is better for Smart Tag to be a separate article. There are many articles in Wikipedia about brands that were rebranded, generally if there is interesting information about the original brand. Unlike the rebranding from Fastoll to Start Tag, the existing Smart Tag system was not simply rebranded, it was assimilated into the larger E-ZPass system. There is historical information in the Smart Tag article that does not apply to the E-ZPass system as a whole. In addition, other state or regional systems that were assimilated into E-ZPass (e.g., Fast Lane, I-Pass, i-Zoom, M-Tag) continue to have separate articles. hulmem (talk) 18:37, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Smart Tag. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it.
