Motto translation

[edit]

With my very limited knowledge I would have thought ascendimus was best translated as "we ascend". My Latin is virtually non-existent so I won't revert you, but perhaps you could point out where I'm going wrong here. I would have thought "ascending" would be something like ascendens. Cheers. — Trilobite (Talk) 02:51, 3 Jan 2005 (UTC)

You are right that the -imus ending means that a literal translation would be either "we are ascending by degrees" or "we ascend by degrees". However, given the the pun of the motto, just "ascending by degrees" is probably the best translation. Perhaps it would be best to add in an explantaion? Tompw

Thanks for clearing this up. I don't think there's any need to note this in the article, as it's only of minor consequence for anyone wanting to know about the college, but I'll copy this exchange to the discussion page in case anyone else wonders about this. Thanks again. — Trilobite (Talk) 00:05, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Discussion above archived from User talk:Tompw.

It used to be reported that the motto was "Gradibus Ascendere", [1]. What does this mean? I don't know any Latin so cannot comment on this. — JG

The same thing, I think. The motto used to be unofficial, until they had their arms regranted last year. I assume that when they submitted to have the motto added, one of the heralds objected to the quality of the Latin and they had it changed for the official version.... "the first of the colleges on Elvet Hill"

[edit]

you forget mary's. grey was only the second college

50 Pence

[edit]

Was Mr Pence actually a member? I was under the impression that he just visited on an open day.

EDIT : Confirmed with the person who met them at the open day, will correct the main article.

EDIT 2: He attended the open day and then joined Grey having taken a year out to pursue musical interests.

EDIT 3: He is definitely a current college member, entering 3rd Year, studying Computer science. I am sure he would very much like to be re-added.

The Phoenix

[edit]

The text says that the College "has since adopted the phoenix as its unofficial badge". It can hardly be unofficial, given that it is the crest on the College's arms. But perhaps a Grey person should make the correction - certainly not I. Kranf (talk) 07:39, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia

[edit]

The edit option seems to be playing up. I removed the trivia section and will incorporate the following into the article when it becomes possible to edit.

* Grey College was originally planned to be named Oliver Cromwell College, but this proved too controversial.[1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by THobern (talkcontribs) 02:46, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
