"Age of consent" misleading

[edit]

In my view the table needs to be reorganized. It is unclear what is meant by "age of consent". Taken literally, this would be the minimum age at which a person could legally consent to marriage. But the actual numbers show the age at which a person can marry without parental/judicial approval. In most jurisdictions, that is the age of majority. But that is not the same as the minimum legal age of marriage. For clarity there should be four columns: legal minimum age; minimum age with consent of parents; minimum age without consent of parents; and remarks.

The topic is complex (compare the table at https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ehem%C3%BCndigkeit_in_den_USA which is better but also incomplete) but the relevant information is not when is the age of majority, but at what age can a child be married, and the article should do a much better job to reflect this.

Immigrants in denmark

[edit]

I made a change deleting the part about marriage age for immigrants in Denmark as it is not quite accurate: the rule is actually not about marriage-age but about about the ability to bring the one you've married to Denmark, so it's actualy not directly making it illegal for anyone to marry, it merely makes it inpractical. Another wrong point is that it says it's about immigrants, the rule applies to the whole population.

Topic in History

[edit]

I would like to see this topic "in history". It's hard to find that sort of information on the Internet today, but it is very useful for writers...

New York

[edit]

New York allows 13 year old girls to marry (with permission)? Sheesh!

The odds of any justice allowing marriage at such a young age are very slim. It is extremely rare that the judicial system will allow such a thing to happen.....imagine if the public found out.
