Horror Train/Switchback/Corkscrew

[edit]

I believe Horror Train is supposed to be a Ghost Train. This is a dark ride, and not a roller coaster. A corkscrew is a roller coaster, but there is already a category for roller coasters. Why have that one at all. You can name all the categories for roller coasters then, and that would be stupid. To me, this is just a portal to see other rides. If you land in the dark rides category, you can find all the dark rides. Thus, similarly if you click on roller coasters, you can find all the roller coasters.

Honestly, I can add a lot of categories to the roller coasters such as wooden/steel/flying/sitdown/floorless/boomerang/mouse/stand up/4th dimension/mega coaster/hyper coaster/giga coaster/ inverted coaster/out and back coaster/dive coaster/impulse coaster/LIM coaster/rocket coaster-accelerator coaster and probably more!!

So, what's the point of having corkscrew on this page??? If you want minimal categories of roller coasters, we can put steel or wooden underneath roller coasters. However, I don't think roller coasters needs anything more than that link. --Dinofunsaur 23:20 24 November (UTC)

[edit]

I'm surprised this hasn't come up before. I moved Gravitron, Tilt-A-Whirl, and Zipper to fairground rides. They are more at fairs/carnivals than amusement parks. There are some of these at amusement parks, but it's very small portion. Also, Huss Top Spins, and Enterprises are at more amusement parks than fairs/carnivals. So, they put them above.

Also, Top Scan, Super Bowl, Steam Yachts, Jolly Tubs, Pharaoh's Fury, and Roll-O-Plane didn't go anywhere except to add a new page. So, I removed them. This is disappointing. If you can find a link to those rides, please put them back on.

Flying Coaster doesn't belong here. It's a roller coaster from Elitch Gardens. I removed that.

Um... There's a flat-ride called the Flying Coaster. If they were referring to the Volare, then by all means keep it removed. Timetrial3141592 00:53, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--194.25.159.210 16:51, 18 November 2006 (UTC) I believe Gravitron, Tilt-A-Whirl and Zipper should be re-added. Despite being overshadowed by more fandangled amusement park rides, they are still a valid and valuable addition to any amusement park's line up. Food for thought, I hope you will agree.[reply]

--Dinofunsaur 23:08, 24 November (UTC) My problem is that I think those rides are more carnivalish rides. How many amusement parks have a Gravitron, Tilt-A-Whirl, and a Zipper. That's why I put them under carnivals in which could be found in amusement parks. I didn't just delete them. They are still there.

I can name a lot of carnival companies that have those rides, but not as many amusement parks. Just around me, the Tilt-A-Whirl is at All Around Amusements, Windy City Amusements, All Star Amusements, Spectacular Amusements, Spectacular Midways, Fantasy Amusements, Astro Amusements. The amusement parks only have one at Kiddieland, and there is another Tilt at a kids center in Villa Park.

So, in my opinion, I see Tilts MORE at carnivals than amusement parks. This is sad, but this is the way it is. I would love if Six Flags Great America, Over Georgia, St. Louis, Gaugea Lake, Disneyworld, Disneyland, Universal Studios, and others would get a Tilt-A-Whirl. Sadly, it's not that way. The point is that I didn't remove the rides, but I just moved them to carnivals/fairs because they are more prominant.

The difference between the two categories is that one contains bigger rides that are mostly only at amusement parks while the other one contains mostly carnival rides. This doesn't mean that it can't be at both. You just try to pick the best one. It's like the Gravitron. I know Windy City, Astro (Starship, and Gravitron), Great American Rides, and All Star Amusements have one. Our amusement parks don't have it. Zipper, we have 4 by carnivals, and none at amusement parks.

The Zipper is a carnival ride. The Tilt-A-Whirl is both a carnival ride and a park ride. Timetrial3141592 00:53, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removed Thrill Ride

[edit]

I've removed the thrill ride entry since it seems to me like a generic term, mostly covered by "amusement ride" (a roller coaster, listed here, surely is a thrill ride, for instance). -- Egil 07:46 Apr 30, 2003 (UTC)

List of ride manufacturers

[edit]

I've put together a list of ride manufacturers, largely culled from the pages on the history of rides at University of Sheffield NFA, and balanced with more USA manufacturers from Coasterchild.

However, its now looking a bit long, and a bit like a web directory, so I'm not so sure about it anymore. -- Solipsist 1 July 2005 17:48 (UTC)

Kamikaze?

[edit]

Will the person who added the link to Kamikaze please disambiguate it? Cactus Wren 12:38, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Caterpillar

[edit]

Is the ride traditionally described as "the Caterpillar" in New England linked under another name? HouseOfScandal02:11, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jumping Thingy

[edit]

Anybody know the name for those inflatable jumping thingies that you see at every amusement park? Aelffin 02:07, 24 August 2007 (UTC) Inflatable. Or Bounce. Or Moonwalk.Carnydog (talk) 07:08, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

reverse bungee?

[edit]

the listing for reverse bungee has added "(also called slingshot or ejection seat}" ... a slingshot has no bungee cords. it has a steel cable connected to a spring box. it has a similar motion to an ejection seat but a completely different mechanism. if one follows the link to 'reverse bungee', there is no information regarding the slingshot to be found.

shoot the chute?

[edit]

the best title for that would be 'flume', every show has a different name for their flume, but when carnies refer to it in the general, it is a 'flume'

fun slide?

[edit]

a fun slide is a branding attached to a particular "dry slide". see my comment on the 'fun slide' talk page.

amusement rides only found in theme parks?

[edit]
  • dark rides?
  • ferris wheels?
  • drop towers? and then in a different line, megadrop?
  • pirate ship/ pharaoh's fury?
  • house of mirrors?
  • teacups?
  • top spin?
  • roller coasters?
  • i'm sure there are others, but i'm tired of looking at the list.

i have personally set-up and/or tore-down each of the rides i have just listed aside from the megadrop, and i have seen more than one trailer mounted megadrop. and i have never worked in a theme park.

i suggest perhaps one complete list of rides, with an indication of whether a ride was manufactured as a park model, as a portable, or both. then in the entry for the ride, there would be further information concerning that ride's history (i.e. originally a park model, but engineered for portability by acme rides in 1978) this list would preferably list all rides by their generic name or most commonly known name. (a zipper will always be a zipper; a giant wheel, a century wheel, an eli 16, and a grand wheel are all ferris wheels; a starship 2000 is nothing more than a renamed gravitron) even this would provide difficulties, though, i.e. is a ranger the same as a kamikaze? perhaps call two rides equivalent if and only if they have the same motions. a ranger would be a kamikaze, because a body in a seat wouldn't know the difference, but a bobs would be different from a himalaya due to the increased motion of the swaying seats. a silver streak would be the same as a himalaya, though, only scaled for children. Flat rides

Re my changes to titles

[edit]

Yes, well as per WP:CAPS I have modified the titles and would like to point out that the page is horribly inconsistent as regards MOS:CAPS, for example:

This is all assuming that these are being used as sentence starters, otherwise we would have helter skelter, drop tower, Screamin' Swing and pendulum ride.

The page is confusing due to this as it mixes and matches types of rides with specific named rides so I would suggest only really notable named rides be mentioned, for example Big Thunder Mountain, due to its length, speed, conception or somesuch other notable criteria. Ferris or big wheels are a type of ride, The London Eye is a notable, specifically-named ride of a variation of this theme.

It's like listing "List of shops" and putting:

  • Barnes & Noble
  • Bookshop
  • Delicatessen
  • Department store
  • Fishmonger's
  • Garden centre
  • Macy's
  • Mario's Italian Emporium

and so on.

Oh, and I edited the title to say Funfair in the second section as Fair/Funfair/Fairground rides is just repetition of the same idea. Fairs usually contain funfairs and fairground is technically the land on which a funfair takes place and so is essentially a synonym. CaptainScreebo Parley! 21:30, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I started editing this article through a misunderstanding, and my main intention was just to make it look better because it was an unholy mess. The easiest way to include only notable rides is list (1) rides that already have an article on Wikipedia and (2) non-Wikipedia rides with a source. Even easier would be to simply remove the non-Wikipedia article rides. I know little about amusement park rides, so if a particular ride didn't have an article, I wouldn't easily know whether it's notable without researching the ride.
As for caps, the first word in the ride should be capitalized if it's an item in a list.
As for types of rides, I don't know enough about it to really have an opinion, but if the rides can be broken down type, the article might be more useful, particularly if one list is overly long.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:18, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thoroughly agree, I guess I will put this on to my list to clean up, I am no expert either but this list is like confusing Types of beverage with Ceylan tea, Earl Grey etc. One is a sub-category of the other. Thanks for feedback. CaptainScreebo Parley! 22:30, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to merge "Amusement park rides" & "Carnival or funfair rides"

[edit]

I've just moved several rides where transportable examples exist from the former section to the latter, per the lead sentences in those sections. There are now only six rides left in the "Amusement park rides" section. As potentially huge rides such as roller coasters and Ferris wheels belong in the "Carnival or funfair rides" section (because "These are traditional and transportable rides found at carnivals/fairs, many of which may also be found in amusement parks.") I suggest the distinction is pointless and the two sections be merged. 2.26.147.56 (talk) 21:41, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I support this proposal. Themeparkgc  Talk  21:52, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

types

[edit]

this edit was reverted with an edit summary that this is a type of ride. This is true -- but there are other types of rides on the list (roller coasters, carousels, etc). I'll let someone else re-add. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 07:05, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"WindSeeker" and "FlowRider" are not types of amusement rides

[edit]

@Adog104: First, WindSeeker is a type of "swing ride at several Cedar Fair parks". Another line from the article once again says "The rides are Wind Seeker models manufactured by Mondial." So clearly the page is specifically about Cedar Fair "WindSeekers" and not the actual attraction itself. Secondly, Flowriding is a "late-20th century alternative boardsport ". So either the Flowriding article can be changed to include "amusement ride" in it, or it just isn't an amusement ride entirely.

Possible original research regarding scariness of rides

[edit]

The sentence in the intro: "Rides are often perceived by many as being scary or more dangerous than they actually are. This could be due to the design or from hearing about accidents involving rides that are similar" is not cited, and it is unclear on what basis these claims are made. (It strikes me as over-intellectualizing the actual emotion, but that's just an estimation by me). Ted BJ (talk) 00:39, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
