Welcome! - UtherSRG 12:49, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Thanks! I've deleted your welcome message just to tidy up a bit (and because I don't need any more encouragement to spend time wikying when I should be working! --ALargeElk 15:43, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Understood! *grins* You can always find it in the page history. - UtherSRG 15:47, 30 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your note on the new user log. Glad to have you here. Careful... you sound like you're well on your way to becoming a wikiholic like me. ;-) Isomorphic 17:04, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, I linked in the wrong area!

[edit]

Sorry I put links to serial killers in the wrong place, I am reverting this immediately. I only saw now, that external links have a special area. Sorry again, eliZZZa

No problem - easily done. The beauty of Wikipedia is that someone will always put things right when you make a mistake.--ALargeElk 12:08, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I am 03webberg who you told that he shouldn't add 'this is good' to pages. I'm sorry, and won't do it again. Please reply.

No problem - we all live and learn.--ALargeElk 12:08, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Speedy Deletions

[edit]

In the future, when tagging a page for speedy deletion, please simply add rather than replacing the content with this tag. This allows the deletion log to show something meaninfgul. Thanks for your concern in this regard, Fennec 15:30, May 5, 2004 (UTC)

Ahh. If the anon blanked it, no big deal. Thanks for marking it, anyway. :) - Fennec 15:37, May 5, 2004 (UTC)

London Congestion Charge

[edit]

It happens quite often, so don't worry about it. In fact most people don't even check the featured article page first, so you're ahead of them! By the way, another place to look is the top of the talk page of an article, some (most/all?) have a message saying they're featured if that's the case. fabiform | talk 16:19, 12 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

You can also check the what links to the article and see if Wikipedia:Featured articles is on the list. That's what I do, anyway. Fredrik 16:24, 12 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

ATR aircraft

[edit]

Hi! You asked why I don't do page title changes for the ATR articles. The reason is that I work only on pictures (about seven hundred articles illustrated so far) but sometimes, along the way, I spot a text error and correct it. I have no idea how to do a redirects or page title changes or anything like that, picture work takes up all my time on WP. Best Wishes, Adrian,
Adrian Pingstone 16:51, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

LargeElk, that's fine. If you can make an article out of it, that's good. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't vandalism. Fuzheado 14:04, 16 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Minor but time consuming admin tasks carried out

[edit]

Sorted out about 30 double redirects at Trans-Siberian railway:What links here

And I rolled some of them back. What do you think rederirects are for? For you to come and edit them? Mikkalai 18:16, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Not to say that you did it in a wrong way. Compare: First Transcontinental Railroad, Central Pacific Railroad and many other: "Railroad" is a part of the name, hence must be capitalized. Mikkalai 20:25, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Welcoming

[edit]

Hey there. Welcome to the welcoming comittee ;-) I have two suggestions for your welcome message. First, while a lot of people like using msg:opentask, some (including me) think it's not that useful, and might suggest that we're assigning work. It's up to you whether you want to use it, of course. Also, I'd suggest a link to the Wikipedia:Tutorial. Thanks for joining, and happy editing, Isomorphic 16:33, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

DSDM move

[edit]

Hi ALargeElk, and thanks for the welcome. Sorry for not doing the DSDM properly, I'd look for a move link but must have missed it. What can I do now? I can't do the move because my new page already exists. I'm guessing I need to get the new page deleted and then do the move properly. What do you think? Thanks, Simonbooth

Thanks

Compliments and Questions

[edit]

ALargeElk, I like your attitude and approach here -- I've seen you comment several places, and I'd say you have exactly the outlook needed to remain sane at Wikipedia (....well, "remain at Wikipedia"....one has to doubt any of us are truly sane). :-) At any rate, I thought I'd say so since we're not good enough around here at actually telling each other when we see good things happening. I wonder if you'd mind me asking you three questions, and will type them in under the assumption you won't. 1) Forgive me, I took a brief vacation - have you been made an administrator yet? 2) Assuming the answer to 1 is "No", do you have any interest in becoming an administrator? 3) Assuming the answer to 2 is "Yes", would you object to my nominating you in two weeks, when you will have spent roughly 3 months here (by my count) and presumably have approx. 1000 edits, which are good round numbers people usually like to see when supporting a nomination? I don't want to force anyone into the role of admin, but I think you have the right perspective for it. If you're already an admin, I can simply apologize that I was not paying attention at the right time to support the nomination. Keep up the fine work, Jwrosenzweig 17:33, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

As someone who was made an admin with roughly 350 edits to my name and 8 weeks' experience (ah, the good old days), I think I'm less sensitive than I should be to the current climate. :-) I will respect your wishes and leave a nomination until at least the 1st of July -- good luck focusing on article production. :-) I find an easy way of doing so is to adopt a little list somewhere and flesh it out -- for example, the list of authors and titles at medieval literature was quite red a while ago, and I've semi-consistently worked at writing articles for the red links when I have nothing else to do. I offer it as my only advice for how to keep aimed at writing articles -- without a list focusing me, I too often find myself back at RC, jumping on vandalism and getting irritated by edit wars. :-) Good luck, and expect a note from me that first week of July telling you I've nominated you -- Jwrosenzweig 16:00, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

[edit]

Hi Texture. I'm no fan of nonsense, but I wonder from the deletion log whether you've been a bit quick in one of your deletions. 29a seems to be a real group - see [1]. It's no big deal - I'm not going to bother listing it on votes for undeletion. I just wondered what your reason was for getting rid of it. (Obviously, you've seen the whole article and I've only seen the bit that got onto the deletion log). -- ALargeElk | Talk 16:52, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

It appeared to be unsupported nonsense (not the name of the group, but the claim). Here is the content for you to evaluate for yourself. If you believe is isn't nonsense I have no objection to listing it for undeletion. (Always better to have more people review a questionable deletion.):
Name of a virus group that created the first [virus] for mobile phones using the [Symbian] [OS]. They are also suposed to have written the first viruses for [.NET] and [Win64].

Ramsgate Flat Earth Society

[edit]

Regards Ramsgate Flat Earth Soc. page: No problem with your vote for deletion, except that you should offer proof it is a fantasy construct. Although I have very many other possible subjects to offer wikipedia, I do not hold that it should exclude fantasy, given some content like Star trek articles I have noted. If Fiction/Faction is not a legitimate subject here may I propose a request for some repository for such items under the heading of WikiNonsence for those of us that get our inspiration from such forms of research? Faedra 12:38, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC) All the best.

I guess the difficulty is in that I have Wikified the item, as if it stood alone it would not register in any linked pages...?

Does the Wikifairy really exist?

Thanks for your comments

[edit]

Regards, Burschik.

I have a slight problem with the article on safflower. I created it, and the link on the "my contributions" page works, but links in other articles still have the edit action appended, for some reason. Maybe you know how to fix that, or whom to ask. - Burschik

I have translated the German language Wikipedia entry on Jülich. However, I do not know how to link to the images. Do you? - Burschik

Thanks for the welcome

[edit]

Thanks for that. Actually I am a long-term wikipedian using this sock puppet in a context where I don't want to get into a heated debate under my "real" name. I know this seems perhaps cowardly but it works for me and I hate it where disputes can boil up in to users following each other round in revert wars etc. Hence this - an attempt to help calmly with the article in question but with the option of it not connecting with my other work here.

Thanks again, --Fanger 12:49, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)

And thanks for those helpful comments just now. --Fanger 13:23, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for the help.

[edit]

Thanks for taking the time to help me out around here. Can you tell me how to mark my own page for deletion? I really don't want to earn any enemies around here, it is such an amazing place. I've been addicted to correcting typos for days now.  :)

Update: OK, I think I figured out how to do it. Let me know if it is listed right.

Thanks

Not sure that quite counted as spam. Mebbi it needed to be better written, but it did give an indication of which territories are covered by which set of rules, which sounds more like useful information. YMMV. best wishes --Tagishsimon

Question

[edit]

Thankyou for the welcome "ALargeElk" it made me feel part of. As you know I am new to this project and I have to remark it reminds me "The Foundation Trilogy." Is there anyway I can contribute without getting in the way? I was studying the NPOV its like infinity, you may be closing in but you never get there. As a philosophy student I have listened to academics discuss objectivity many a time but none seemed honestly neutral. Thanks again, Fred -- User:lightmatter

God of Spam

[edit]

Thank you for your self-righteous removal of "spam" from the computer forensics page.

First of all, thank you for your contributions. Computer forensics and data recovery are important topics and it's great that you, along with others, are prepared to put your own time into these articles.
But that has to be within the boundaries of what the project as whole is about, and at the absolute core of what Wikipedia is about is the notion of Neutral Point of View. That has to go for external links as much as for any other part of articles. If we link to Fields Associates, Wikipedia is implicitly endorsing the company. And what's to stop a thousand other data recovery companies placing their links at the bottom of articles? See point 18 on What Wikipedia entries are not.
Have a look at my personal manifesto on what external links should be and do. You asked, in an earlier edit, whether a small link at the bottom of an article is too much. Sorry, but I'm afraid that the answer is yes. -- ALargeElk | Talk 10:44, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)

"I will give myself until July 9th to try to get some self-control..."

[edit]

Oh dear, you poor addict, Elk. By 11 July, with only two contributions, it seemed you had got control of your WP urges, but things have got "worse" again since. Without going so far as a formal blocking, I hereby "prohibit" you from contributing more than once a week (for the rest of 2004) to the Maori Wikipedia (the only one I have sysop powers in). Someone else (if there is anyone who doesn't think your contributions are great) can maybe try to stop you overdoing things in English! Control, control, control ... Great caption!

[edit]

Very nice Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak caption. I hope you'll write some more or even join the WikiProject! Thanks. -- ke4roh 20:29, Jul 23, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind words about my caption on the Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak. I'm not going to formally join the Wikiproject - I've already got too much to do! - but will be keeping an eye out and may dip into the project page from time to time to see what needs to be done. On that note, would you mind having a look at my caption for Rock, Paper, Scissors? I've marked it as done but now I'm not sure it's all that great. -- ALargeElk | Talk 10:26, 26 Jul 2004 (UTC)
You're most welcome! I had looked at Rock, Paper, Scissors thinking of writing a caption and in fact came up with about the same thing as you - so while I doubt it's particularly inspired, I'm sure it's better than just saying those are the hand signs. Thanks. I'll look forward to your occasional edits. -- ke4roh 16:57, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for helping with the History of Scotland captions. My eyes nearly popped out when I saw what was to be done today! Thanks, too, for joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Writing Captions - welcome! -- ke4roh 15:49, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)

Question about advertising

[edit]

Hi Elk.

Saw you removed the alternative listing for efax with the reasoning that it was advertising. It was my first post, and I certainly don't want to violate any rules of wiki etiquette. Can you explain why defining a specific brand would be advertising? I would submit spam, kleenex or word (leading to Microsoft Word) as counterexamples. I've looked at many of the FAQs. Sorry if I missed it.

Thanks!

"Assemblymember"

[edit]

Yes, "assemblymember(s)" is one word. The members of the California lower legislative house, the Assembly, used to be called "assemblyman" and "assemblymen," pronounced with a schwa for the last vowel. When nonsexist langugage came in, it mutated into "assemblymember." My own personal preference would have been, "assemblydudes." ;-) --Gary D 19:17, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Someone has now separated the phrase into two words in the article, and on second inspection of its usage in the article, I actually agree with that. As an honorific title, it's one word, but as a noun, which is how it is used in the article, it is still permissible, even more common, as two words. --Gary D 22:03, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

"Tridechodrome"

[edit]

Tridechodrome, for reference, is a new term I'm trying to gain recognition for. That is why I am adding links to notable Tridechodromes. By the way, thank you for the welcome. I am at a camp right now, where I've been introduced to Wikipedia, and plan to set up my own account once I get home.

Thanks, Driezhen Doppleganger

Thanks for your message - and welcome to Wikipedia. Good luck with popularising your new term - unfortunately, this isn't the place to do it. Have a look at what Wikipedia is not, and in particular, at points 2 and 10 on "what Wikipedia entries are not". If and when the term becomes notable, it'll be included.
Please don't be put off from helping to create this encyclopedia. It shouldn't take long to learn what we're all about. --ALargeElk | Talk 14:18, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Cardiff Arms Park

The full name of the Millenium Stadium is Millenium Stadium, Cardiff Arms Park. Since they're on the same site, sharing the common history and usage, both stadia might as well be covered in the same article. Dunc_Harris| 14:57, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Suffering from Wikiholism

[edit]

Hello there! Believe me, I sympathize with you. I know the intoxicating, addictive, almost maddening power of wikiholism. You've got more sense that I have - there have been times when I should have asked for a block myself. Anyway, it's done now. I've blocked you till the 11th. If withdrawal symptoms start to drive you mad in the meantime, don't hesitate to e-mail me, and I'll unblock you:-) Cheers! David Cannon 11:16, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Although I respect your desire to stay away, I've unblocked you. Currently, Wikipedia:Blocking policy does not allow users to be blocked in order to enforce wikiholidays. Nevertheless, if I can be of any assistance in your efforts at self-discipline, please let me know. One thing I might suggest is to ask someone if they would automatically revert any edits you make until the end of your wikiholiday. Perhaps knowing that your work will be undone might make the urge to edit easier to control. --Michael Snow 16:01, 4 Aug 2004 (UTC)

England Expects

[edit]

Hello. I read your bit about the misquotation of Nelson's signal. I'm interested to know your reference for this. (I only ask because I read somewhere that Nelson's Column says "England expects every man will do his duty" - i.e. missing out "that", but otherwise correct.) --Auximines 09:05, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. Historical Maritime Society sounds pretty authoritative! --Auximines 09:31, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
P.S. None of my business, but if you want a forced Wikiholiday, how about changing your password to something you can't remember? Email it to a friend and ask them to email it back in a week. No?

Fields Data Recovery

[edit]

We applaud your war on spam, however, we spent time and resources developing the data recovery article and would appreciate the external link that you removed. The last thing we would like to see is Wikipedia being turned into a link building free-for-all. Unfortunately, many self-proclaimed spam fighters lose sight of the fact that many commercial websites ARE in fact relevant, especially those who offer further technical information, software etc. Would it be too much to ask for you to put the link back? Regards, Dr J Stabler (Fields Data Recovery)

Comment on my contribution

[edit]

I read your comment to me on my article on hierarchy of genres, thank you for the compliment. I hope you look at the other articles I've written and are planning to write at my user page; all of the ones that I list and have completed were either completely or almost completely done by me. I did all of the ones I finished around the same time, and planned to work hard to add more on my list but I got sidetracked; I think I'll return to writing articles soon though. I'm having problems writing right now, so if you find any of the writing style too clumsy feel free to edit. I'm also planning work on a site of my own, which intended to cover all of cultural history and have pictures of artwork, mp3s of music, texts of literature and philosophy; I also plan to present the eras in history very completely so that people can see the atmosphere of the times. I want to do this, because even though I like Wikipedia, I think its too unstructured: a lot of articles are written by people who have different agendas, and there is no focus or presentation of the different topics, or clarity to their importance in history or in the subject. I also get annoyed by the number of articles where people are promoting their pet ideology, or those that become confused battlegrounds between people with different views, without any perspective to which one has a better understanding. I haven't planned anything besides making the site all myself, but I think it might be neat if I could create something like a wiki but which had editorial direction so wasn't as freeform as Wikipedia is. brianshapiro 21:53, 2004 Aug 11

The members, of course, will form and solidify the purpose, rules, officers, etc. but my idea (to kick things off) is to establish a group of us who will take responsiblity to see that the ideas of Data management are promoted and well represented in Wikipedia articles.

If you are willing to join the committee, please go to Category_talk:Data_management and indicate your acceptance of this invitation by placing your three tilde characters in the list.

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Calcutta -> Kolkata name change

[edit]

Hi there. I noticed you voted in the Wikipedia:Naming policy poll to keep the Wikipedia policy of naming an article with the most familiar English name. You may not be aware that another attempt has begun to rename the Calcutta article to Kolkata, which is blatantly not the most common name of the city, whether it's official or not. If you want to vote on the issue you can do so at Talk:Calcutta. Cheers. -- Necrothesp 13:32, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Bukkake spam

[edit]

Hi Elk, you seem to be somewhat of an expert on spam/external links, so I would like to ask your opinion of the discussion that has been going on at the Bukkake article discussion page regarding the repeated adding (and then deletion) of the "bukkake.com" website. The person that keeps adding the link has even admitted on my talk page that it is his own website. Do you agree that this is a case of blatant spam? If so, what to do? Reasoning with the person does not seem to help.

Issues about school articles

[edit]

In November 2003, there was a VfD debate over Sunset High School (Portland). The debate was archived under Talk:Sunset High School (Portland). What to do with the article is still being contested and has been recently re-nominated for VfD at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Sunset High School (Portland).

I am writing to you because you have participated in such debates before. There still does not exist a wikipedia policy (as far as i can tell) over what to do in regards to articles about specific U.S. public school. My hope is that a real consensus can come out of the debate, and a real policy can take shape. Take part if you are so willing. Kingturtle 02:41, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)

A'Tong listed at Redirects for discussion

[edit]

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect A'Tong. Since you had some involvement with the A'Tong redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion (if you have not already done so). Cnilep (talk) 23:58, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
