Samira (also spelled Samirah, Sameera, and Sameerah; Sanskrit: समीर, romanizedsamīra Arabic: سميرة pronounced [saˈmiːra]) is a Sanskrit or Arabic given name. In Sanskrit, Sameera or Samira (Sanskrit: समीरः, romanizedsamīraḥ) is a feminine given-name, meaning "breeze, wind,"[1] or "Vāyu, the wind deity".[2] Many anglicize their name to Samīr or Sameer.

In Arabic, the feminine name is derived from the root s-m-r ("to spend the night in talking"),[3] ultimately meaning "night-companion",[4] "entertaining companion",[5] "the one with lively conversation".[6] The masculine version of this name is Samir.
