From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A search on Google show the actor coming up more frequently than this songwriter guy. I think this should be a disambiguation page and have this guy on Leslie Phillips (songwriter).

Search for Sam Phillips (not the nude model, btw).. that's the name that she's famous for. Leslie Phillips is just her real name and she hasn't used it for nearly 20 years. I originally had the page at Sam Phillips, but obviously that doesn't make sense because the first famous Sam Phillips was the owner of Sun Records. Would Sam Phillips (singer) make sense? -jazz77
Leslie Phillips (actor) shows up on IMDB as Leslie Phillips, whilst the singer shows up as Sam Phillips (aka Leslie).
I'll move her to Sam Phillips (singer). It makes more sense anyway, because that's the name she's known by. That's what should have been done originally. I'm not sure who moved my page to the Leslie Phillips page originally.. -jazz77

Contact information?

[edit]

In What Wikipedia Is Not, it is clear that Wikipedia is not meant to be a phonebook. However, this section does not clearly prohibit contact info. This info is also not likely to change, given Mr. Phillips' age.

This info was removed, and I've put it back -- not to spite the user who removed it, but because I think this might be valid under Wiki rules. LMK what you think. --Proteus71 21 Apr 2005
I would be inclined to say it shouldn't be included. Even if it doesn't breach Wiki rules it makes it a bit too much like a promotional piece. Anyone who needs to contact him can find out this info from other cources fairly easily. There's also the question of consistency. Other actors probably won't have that information in their articles. Book

[edit]

"Leslie Phillips' autobiography, Hello is due to be published by Orion in 1997."
Is this copied from something ten years' old, or does it have a typo for "2007"?
Silverhelm 04:11, 27 August 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Sorry! Don't know where the 1997 came from. Corrected. Bluewave 09:17, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

[edit]

I've come to this article as a reader, I can't believe there isn't a usable picture of Leslie Phillips available somewhere. Escaper7 08:30, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to find one, nearly one year later! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 01:33, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personal life

[edit]

Is it just me, or is the near-forensic analysis of LP's personal/love life, taking up as much space as (if not more than) his professional career, a little excessive? AuntFlo (talk) 10:15, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, but at least it did save me buying a copy of his autobiography.124.120.132.10 (talk) 14:29, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No it isn't just you, or you - came to this page to say it's way too long and reads like an apologist ghost-written autobiography. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.96.60.235 (talk) 22:40, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No it isn't just you, or you, or you - stopped by to say it reads like a Mills & Boon — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.49.138.54 (talk) 14:09, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The personal life section is vastly inappropriate and totally unsourced. Over-long and filled with minutiae that does not belong. It needs to be drastically reduced. Anyone up for doing it? Davidpatrick (talk) 06:25, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Royal Shakespeare Company performance

Help

[edit]

I'm trying to get the link to Leslie Philips and Danny-John Jules on Gex wiki, but the only way I know how is by the URL, how do you link "Leslie Phillips" to the page on him on here —Preceding unsigned comment added by Phthinosuchusisanancestor (talkcontribs) 20:43, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Leslie Phillips and Kate Bush

[edit]

No mention here that Kate loved Leslie's voice so much that she asked him to do a voice-over on the radio/cinema ads for her 2005 album Aerial, since when the two have become friends. This is in the bio. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.102.207.126 (talk) 11:57, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

English stereotypes

[edit]

...he became known for playing amusing English stereotypes, including the 1955 TV series Robin Hood starring Richard Greene.

It ought to say which kind of English stereotype he was playing in that series. Valetude (talk) 20:02, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Carry On survivors notable?

[edit]

OK. I think the fact that Leslie Phillips is the only surviving cast member of The Navy Lark is a notable and interesting fact. But do we really need a least of about 10 of the (mostly) younger Carry On actors who are still alive after the recent death of Barbara Windsor? I mean "Leslie Phillips is one of about 10 Carry On actors that haven't kicked the bucket yet" doesn't seem to make Phillips that unique, and strikes me as a tad morbid. - PaulHammond (talk) 09:51, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

VE Day: Remembering Victiry

[edit]

This programme was broadcast on BBC One in May 2015 for the 70th anniversary of VE Day. It was repeated in 2020 for the 75th anniversary. Leslie Phillips did make his last TV appearance on this programme, but it was in 2015, not 2020. BritFlicks1 (talk) 18:18, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox and "Remembering Victory" edits

[edit]

We want to get this article onto "Recent deaths' but the endless disruptive edits are not helping.

Regarding "Remembering Victory", "VE Day: Remembering Victory" is a television programme made for the 70th anniversary of VE Day and first broadcast on 4 May 2015. Sources for its transmission and Leslie Phillips' involvement include the BBC website and the BFI website. This programme was retitled for the 75th anniversary in 2020 and repeated. A Radio Times article detailing the BBC's VE Day 2020 schedule supports this "This documentary, narrated by Julie Walters and first shown for the 70th anniversary in 2015, asks famous faces to share their recollections from that special day". Indeed, the BBC press release titles the 2020 programme identically to in 2015, as "VE Day: Remembering Victory". The photo, on Anne Reid, used for this 2020 programme on the BBC website is identical to shots of Reid in the 2015 trailer. This is clearly the same programme. Phillips was not interviewed anew for it. It is the 2015 programme.

In addition to the 2020 date being erroneous, the sources that have been provided for it are not up to scratch - one is IMDB, which is not a reliable source, and the other is an obscure events website with information about the 2020 "VE Day 75" broadcast, none indicating that it was a new programme. Indeed, this latter source, from 2020, claims Phillips was among the celebrities "who have died since the programme was first shown". This both indicates the programme was not new, and indicates the website is not to be trusted - because Phillips was still alive! Whichever way you slice it, this is not a usable source to support Phillips being interviewed in 2020. I've replaced the sources with reliable ones to support the 2015 date, from BFI and the BBC, and a further source, the Radio Times article I mentioned before, to support the 2020 programme being a repeat. I don't think we need to mention the repeat in this article because it is just that, a repeat.

Phillips suffered two major strokes in 2012 and "Remembering Victory" in 2015 is the only thing we know he did after them. No sources support him being active up to 2020, or up to 2022. Incidentally, here's a picture from what is, as far as I can find, Leslie Phillips' final public appearance in 2017. He wasn't a well man.

It is frustrating trying to get this article sorted. He's been dead for a good few days now. I hope I've explained exactly why the edits from 2015 to 2020 in the "later work" section, and from 2015 to 2022 in the infobox, are incorrect and disruptive. I really am not trying to get on anyone's nerves, I just wanted to clarify and get this sorted. Please discuss here but I would ask whoever might be reading not to revert again. A new IP (194.230.161.17) with the exact same location is doing this 2015>2022 disruptive editing now. I think it's likely the same user. Humbledaisy (talk) 19:40, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
