Dining Hall

[edit]

"At some point, food service in the dining hall was ended " What? When did that happen? I graduated in 1999 (and lived in Bowles for 3 years) , and up to that point the Bowles dining hall was regarded as the best quality dining hall (especially on friday bar-b-ques).ur_land

By 2003 (when I started at Cal), Bowlesmen were eating at Foothill. - mako 05:00, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well I'm here in 2006 and theres no food here but vending machines and a fridge; everyone eats at Foothill. Lx Rogue 04:25, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was lived in Bowles 2003-2004 and they had ended the dining hall around in 2000-2001. The administration promised to make refurnish the hall with a pool table, ping pong table, vending machines, and a television. However, someone broke our machine, and the television was never properly locked down and was stolen. The Bowles dining hall chef went over to cook at Foothill but retired or was laid off the year before I started school. Last time I lived there, Bowles still had barbeques on Fridays roughly once a month, and at the end of every semester, we had decent catering in the Bowles lounge from Clark Kerr, but in general there is no more food served at Bowles. I lived in Bowles from 1979 to 1982 and we had meal service on weekdays. Weekend meals were served at Stern Hall, which provided a chance to mix and mingle. As mentioned in the main article, the food at Bowles was very good during this period.

The DC was last operational 2000-2001. I lived in Bowles 2001-2002 and it was closed then.

Lost Traditions

[edit]

There were a number of awards that had been given out over the years. These included:

Clean Room Award: Given to someone by the A.S.S.H.O.L.E. either for having a really messy room, or for various other reasons. The recipient would have his room filled with wadded newspaper, hay, etc.

Richard C. Cutts Boron Award: This was a plaque given to someone who "Knows Everything About Nothing, And Nothing About Everything"

Dickie Taylor Best Use of Side Room Award: This is a plaque given to the Bowlesman who made best use of his side room with members of the opposite sex. Dickie Taylor was said to have been a resident in the 1960s or 1970s who was allegedly able to seduce anyone. One story suggests that he spent the night with a woman who earlier that evening had been slow dancing with her long-time boyfriend. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.140.60.68 (talk) 08:07, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the early 1980s, more students were enrolled in the University and the number of returning students was limited to provide more room for incoming Freshmen. The reduction in the number of returning students resulted in a loss of certain traditions. Also, some of the awards were given to graduating and/or other non-returning students and were thus lost.

Page origin

[edit]

I started this page hoping to give some luster back to the place I spent two collegiate years at, for better or worse. Hopefully some noteworthy alumni from Bowles can be listed/gathered on here and bring some justification to any pride in the Hall. Wodan
