Some reports of feminist criticisms of his work, with sources, would be good to have here. -- Karada 09:14, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Laura Mulvey

[edit]

Laura Mulvey has written a critique of Allen Jones' work (in particular reference to his 'Furniture').

In her 1973 essay titled "Fears, Fantasies and the Male Unconscious or 'You Don't Know What's Happening, Do You Mr. Jones?'" -- from British feminist magazine Spare Rib; She discussed Jones' images in relation to fetishism in the stictly Freudian sense. She suggested that his work is not about women as such. Rather it might represent Jones' own male fears. She suggests that Jones has reproduced "Woman" as spectacle and her primary function as a sexual being; and as the object of a specifically masculine gaze/desire.

What I would personally be interested in is seeing not so much feminist views on Allen Jones - but post feminist theories that might have a more positive reading of his work. --Dadasurealism 07:52, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
