Article name

[edit]

(How) is this distinct from Sunderland? --Greg K Nicholson

The first sentence of each article provides the answer. The City of Sunderland is th e(rather confusing) name for the county, while Sunderland is the city and port. The JPStalk to me 09:40, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The City of Sunderland refers to both the geographical urban entity of Sunderland City and the administrative disrtict in which Sunderland City council also cover. It is confusing but when you look at what a CIty is, it usually is a collection of smaller towns and settlements and the larger Core or city centre (proper). So the actuall City has 177,000 pop. whereas the district (City Borough) has nearly 300,000. --dj_paul84 00:57 10 June 2006

District v. Borough

[edit]

As the Local Government Act of 1972 created Metropolitan Districts which if qualified were allowed to petition the Queen for the right to call themselves Borough surely we should stop saying The City of Sunderland is a metropolitan borough as the honour of city status has overridden the honour of Borough status would. "The City of Sunderland is a metropolitan is correct, surely. --garryq 15:03, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Famous residents

I just wanted to say "well done" to Trafford09 for this move of some content from here to List of people from Sunderland. I feel that these lists, although interesting, can easily become near-unmanageable and a real problem in the main article, and that such a split is almost always a good idea. I certainly feel that it has benefited every article where I have seen it happen. Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 11:47, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
