Spouses

[edit]

Is that section correct? According to that, he was married when he was 4, had a second wife when he was 5, and had 3 wives when he was 13.

Those are the years his wives were alive (birth/death dates), not the years they were his spouses. - Ichneumon (talk) 22:16, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Removing the dates, this is just confusing. If someone know the years they were married, please add them to the box. Bjelleklang - talk 10:18, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article should be renamed to "Harry R. Truman"

[edit]

Article should be renamed to "Harry R. Truman" because:

  • He is better known as "Harry R Truman". Even if Randall is his middle name, it's not how he's popularly known, like George W. Bush.
  • News reports at the time called him Harry Truman or Harry R Truman.
  • National Geograhic 1981 article commented "(he never told me what the “R.” stood for)".[1]
  • His gravestone says Harry R Truman.[2]
  • His war service card has Harry R Truman.[3] (though maybe all service cards did that).
  • The only source for his middle name that I can find is this one[4] and I'm not convinced it's a WP:RS.

Moving to Harry R. Truman

[edit]

Per the comment above, I agree that this page should probably be renamed. Does anyone object to this? ceranthor 19:52, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

[edit]

Ceranthor, these are my comments.

  • Since life section gives detail of his birth place, I think it should also be included in the infobox.
  • Link William O. Douglas in the caption.
Prefer not to link in captions.
  • Maybe high school should link to High school (North America) instead?
  • "He became a bootlegger, smuggling alcohol from San Francisco to Washington"- overlinking of Washington.
  • "Here, he opened the Mount St. Helens Lodge" - maybe there works better?
  • "from staying at his lodge, dismissing him as an "old coot"" - source after a quote, even if it is repeating it.
  • Any details on when he got married?
There are details about his marriages (ancestry.com article), but none of them come from reliable sources per WP:RS.
  • "cantankerous" 👍 Like
  • "Truman also received many fan letters[14] including" - suggest putting a comma after letters.
  • Suggest linking David A. Johnston in the caption of his image.
Same as above.
  • "Truman's cousin Richard Ice commented that he "was not only a fast talker but loud. He had an opinion on all subjects and a definite one." " - same as above; source after quote.
  • "Truman was the subject of the book Truman of St. Helens: The Man and His Mountain written by his niece Shirley Rosen[20] and the book The Legend Of Harry Truman" - not a fan of "Truman was the subject of the book x and the book y". Might work better as "..of the books"

Looks almost good to go. FrB.TG (talk) 10:42, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@FrB.TG: Should be fixed, except for the two I responded to with comments. ceranthor 12:39, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know what you think of these, FrB.TG, when you get a chance. I don't think the marriage details are absolutely critical, but I want the article to be as comprehensive as possible. I'm hoping to take this to FAC shortly. ceranthor 13:51, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Your changes look good. Regarding the captions, I don't understand why you prefer not linking in captions (you already have in the lead image's caption). It's the ALTs where one should avoid wiki-linking. FrB.TG (talk) 14:34, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'll add links to the captions, then. ceranthor 15:40, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great! As it currently stands, I'd support it at FAC. FrB.TG (talk) 16:20, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Birthdate

[edit]

If October 30 was just the date Truman used as a matter of preference, shouldn't the lede and the infobox just say "October 1896"? A "see below" footnote could be inserted if needed.— PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 18:01, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

PinkAmpersand, sure. I'll change it. ceranthor 18:15, 6 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Theories about Truman Surviving?

[edit]

Are there any theories about Truman faking his death and fleeing with his cats? The article says that the remains of Truman and his cats were never found. Inkan1969 (talk) 15:18, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Inkan1969, This is only a talk page regarding improvements to the article on Harry R. Truman. It is not, however, a discussion board on this man. I would be happy to talk with you on him elsewhere. Thank you, Heliozoan (talk) 22:22, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think Spirit Lake level rose after the eruption and would have complicated such effort. This might be worth adding. ☆ Bri (talk) 19:44, 21 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Or is it just a coincidence of their names? Lovewhatyoudo (talk) 03:54, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just coincidence. Cheers! Fakescientist8000 (💬) 20:34, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
