Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. Here's some tips:

  • You can introduce yourself on the new users page.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • Remember to use the show preview button before you save a page.
  • If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page.

Other useful pages are: how to edit, how to write a great article, naming conventions, manual of style and the Wikipedia policies.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Angela. 12:41, Mar 28, 2004 (UTC)

Kitten?

[edit]

Hi - are you a kitten perchance? Evercat 14:16, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)

ooh ... not yet, but I've just been having a read over there and might well become one! VampWillow 18:31, 2004 Apr 9 (UTC)
... and now I am! VampWillow 17:32, 2004 Apr 11 (UTC)

Edits

[edit]

Hi VW. In general it's considered better not to edit other people's contributions on Talk pages. I do understand that there is a bit of a special circumstance in that you had thought better of a piece of information and wanted it removed: I would happily have done this for you immediately if you had asked me. I am not upset by this but you should be aware that some people get very, very exercised about stuff like this on here. :) Nevilley 08:34, 10 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Noted. I generally follow the policy - here, LJ, Geo or anywhere else - of always using the ident someone posts under in that place as the way I refer to them, no matter if I know an alternative (or even IRL), so your use came as a shock. VampWillow 09:35, 2004 May 10 (UTC)
Sure. I was just trying to be polite and sound reasonable (a losing battle probably!). No problem. Nevilley 10:24, 10 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Small World

[edit]

My, it is a small world, isn't it? ;) abigailb/Morwen 18:49, May 10, 2004 (UTC)

Yup. was just (unconnectedly) checking my friends and deleted some and added others ... --VampWillow 20:16, 2004 May 10 (UTC)
I should point you at Wikipedia:Auto-biography, just in case.... Morwen 21:38, May 10, 2004 (UTC)

Lesbian Avengers

[edit]

Hi VampWillow. Cool that you are a Lesbian Avenger. If you want, could you check that article for accuracy/completeness?
Also, if you want your anonymous (IP address only in page history) edits attributed to your username, have a look at Wikipedia:Changing attribution for an edit. -- Kimiko 17:55, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Took a quick look at the article and what is there seems fine. I do however have some early material in my off-line reference papers so shall search them out and update the page.
I doubt I'll go back and change the IP addressed changes for the simple reason I can't remember where they were! (and my IP changes every few days so can't do it that way either) but thanks for the thought. VampWillow 01:01, 2004 May 3 (UTC)

London meetup

[edit]

Normal user? Are you implying that the rest of us are abnormal?  ;-) theresa knott 19:36, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

definitely not! (I'm very weird). I was actually trying to refer to being a user who has no wiki-op/admin/etc status ;-) --VampWillow 20:06, 2004 May 20 (UTC)
I knew that already. I was just tring to be funny. The reason that there appear to be a lot of admins on the list is that most long term wiki addicts end up as admins. And it's these wiki addicts that end up wanting to meet each other. But there are plenty of normal weirdos coming anyway. It nice to meet you by the way, and I expect it'll be even nicer IRL theresa knott 20:13, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Have now just received an alternate invitation elsewhere that day. Why is it that summer weekends get just t-o-o busy (rhetorical). Anyway, if I make it there I shall be pleased to meet you too (and yes, I did rather realise it wasn't serious ;-) --VampWillow 21:01, 2004 May 20 (UTC)

Real

[edit]

mea culpa ... it was only after I completed all the moves, relinking and dismbiguation page changes that I remembered (aka. realised) there was a 'move page' option that could have been the first step in the process. According to the ref page on reversing cut&paste moves I'd already gone too far and looking at the edit history it seems to be edits every couple of minutes by one user but it is still recorded against the Real page. I shall try to never do this wrongly again. --VampWillow 01:51, 31 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

note ... I got it right the next time! (I moved Guy to Guy (music group) on June 4) :: bounce ::

UK/United Kingdom

[edit]

And its going to get worse with time. Special:Categories is getting a bit unwieldy. (maybe it would help to filter out albums) Morwen 12:45, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

O...M...G...!! who the f*** started that one off? Maybe an Albums/Decade/Year structure, but that is just too unweildy ... methinks you are sadly right ... the point (I thought ... maybe I was wrong) to categories was to make it easier to find things that naturally form into obvious groupings, not harder. ho hum. --VampWillow 23:15, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Illustrative

[edit]

Concise and straightforward illustration at Coffee percolator#Pressure Type. Very 1980s. Great job, hope to see more! (Not necessarily on the same topic. I don't know how many drawings one can make on the theme of coffee....) --Menchi 12:11, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. That one is a very close approximation of the cross-section through the one I just made my morning coffee in! (definitely a design classic from Italy). Coffee is *very* important (lol), but other images will certainly come along ;-) --VampWillow 12:26, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Brent Cross

[edit]

Hi I'm afraid that Brent Cross Station is not within the Geographical and administrative area called the London Borough of Brent. Please have a look at this map The borough boundary is shown as a thick purple line which runs right down the middle of the Edgware Road in the bottom left corner The side with Humber Road and Oxgate lane is Brent, the side with Geron Way is not. I have not reverted Brent Cross cos I don't want to start edit wars! Maybe you could check it out for yourself to confirm the accuracy of what I think is correct. We'll change Brent Cross when we are agreed! David Thrale 14:09, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hi ... I'd gone by the markings on my OS 1:25000 map of the area, but have now been and looked at the official map (www.election-maps.co.uk if you didn't know where to find them) and you are indeed correct. My apologies! Have made a change; let me know what you think. btw. you added 1995 as the date for the new construction but I couldn't find a source for that and don't recall the works starting until some years after that. --VampWillow 20:36, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I wasn't aware of [www.election-maps.co.uk]. 1995 was taken of the Brent Cross website. I think you are right. If I was to guess, I'd say that it was extended in 2000 but that is just a guess David Thrale 21:21, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Sorry to butt in here but given that their own site claims they started the last redevelopment in 1995 I'd be tempted to go with that, and I feel that 2000 is certainly too recent. We've been going there longer than I care to recall and it seems to me to have been in its current stable (ha!) state for some time. Bear in mind that Brent Cross distorts the normal passage of time anyway, and there are people wandering around in Fenwick's who still think it is about 1962. But I have certainly been trying to baggsy the nicest table in the "new" Italian cafe in the food court, the centre one where its balcony overlooks the way from the car park, for more than four years!  :) --Nevilley 08:18, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)
After I finished laughing, you are so right about Fenwick's ... ;-) --VampWillow 11:44, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)

BBC4

[edit]

It's nice to see I'm not the only one who watches TV and edits wiki articles as they come up. Tonight you are clearly watching BBC4. :) I can credit Parkour, San Ysidro, California, and Yanbu' al Bahr to the same phenomenon, and Pelagic zone to my not understanding part of Finding Nemo. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 00:50, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Drat ... caught out again ;-) --VampWillow 09:33, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Ken's pledge

[edit]

Can you document the one-term pledge? I can't find anything that fits, but I can find that [1], which indicates that in 2000, he was definitely thinking about a second term. Morwen - Talk 08:47, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Ah, having looked into this a bit more, this seems to be something from 1998 that he said. I've clarified that. Morwen - Talk 08:56, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Answered before I'd even read the first query! nice one! IIRC he said it when he first decided to run as an independent but I can trace it if you want. btw. Do you think it might be useful to put the results comparison I put on my LJ on the WP page? --VampWillow 09:32, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Definitely. Morwen - Talk 09:36, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)
That link makes me slightly happier. However, I still don't believe he campaigned on the issue. The Guardian and BBC have archives going well back, so if is something he made a big deal about in 2000, then we ought to find it.
I also note that [2] only contains the 1998 claim. Morwen - Talk 11:49, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I'm on my way out now to a Delga meeting but will try to find other links when I return. I can locate other ones through LD links but was searching for non-party links. The Guardian one though says he campained on the issue in 2000 and I certainly recall him (with my 'a london voter' hat on) doing so ... --VampWillow 12:05, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Old St tube

[edit]

Hi, saw your change to this. I thought that there was no surface buildings left, in fact I thought I'd seen this claim somewhere I thought was authoritative (unless it was here of course!) I know the building you mean (I think - it used to say someone's dining rooms on it, or something? Quite grand looking reddish building??) and I don't remember thinking it looked - er - tuboid, but I'd be interested to see what you can come up with. I might have a look too and see if I can find anything that helps one way or the other. :) (16:08, 13 Jun 2004 by Nevilley)

yes, that's the block I mean. The dining rooms (such a lovely concept!) are a bit further along, but I'm reasonably certain that two of the arches nearer to the junction with Old Street were the original station entrance. --VampWillow 15:14, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)
ah yes. Slightly confused as usual, sorry. The ?? Alexandra Dining Rooms (or something) are (were?) in the next big building up the road, and the one you are referring to is the rather splendid thing called maybe Empire Hall (?) with a slightly unsuitable blue sunshade thing out the front. I wonder what the history of these two buildings is?? I'm intrigued, especially by the dining room! Anyway, I am driving in to work a couple of days a week at the moment so I look at that d*mn building every time and think "is it, isn't it? what does VW know that I don't?!" and it's driving me nuts! Have you got anywhere with this yet? I am SO SURE you're wrong that it actually hurts, but, of course, I cannot find a shred of evidence and equally naturally (a sign of the encroaching years) I can't remember where on earth I saw the statement that nothing remains! Doh! Have you tried Googling on "Old Street"? Yeah, right, waste of time! Maybe I saw it in one of those old printed "book" thingies we used to have. Anyway, I'm right and you're wrong so ner <grin>, but I'm not changing the article back without some evidence, on the grounds that you haven't actually made it "wrong" in my eyes by removing that statement, but putting it back in would make it wrong in yours. However I challenge you to find the evidence and I bet you a drink you can't! :) --Nevilley 07:39, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Kingsway tramway subway

[edit]

Hi - Kingsway tram subway and the strand underpass are the same thing - the strand underpass was built from half of the tram subway. They don't need to be separate articles. Secretlondon 17:22, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Not at all the same thing! Linked, certainly, but they have different intents, histories and futures (working on that now) I would suggest, especially as one is public (tram) transport and the other is private (car) it would complicate matters to mix them together. --VampWillow 17:31, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Nice rewrite. I agree they should be two articles for lots of reasons - suppose for example we can get a pic for the Strand Underpass, that would look much better as the main pic for a split article than tucked away in an integrated one. And in linking from other articles, which may well happen, it's much better if we've got two separate destinations. ting ting! Move along inside there please! Any more fares?? :) --Nevilley 19:53, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Thanks ... more a "delete all and insert" job really, but quite an enjoyable task as I've always been interested in transport history. Many thanks, btw, for catching loads of typos - much appreciated! --VampWillow 20:44, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)
You're most welcome. :) --Nevilley 23:28, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)

There's a rather good page with pics here - http://www.starfury.demon.co.uk/uground/kwupass.html - which I have linked where relevant. Almost incredibly this bloke DID see some remains of the Aldwych station underground, despite it having a road shoved through it, so I have updated that article accordingly. Fascinating stuff eh? Oh and I'm glad you liked the pic, I nearly got splattered taking it! :) --Nevilley 07:39, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I've seen whole sets of pictures from parts of the old tramway. So far as Aldwych (T) station is concerned I believe some platform level stuff may remain but I was trying to ensure people didn't wander down the tunnel on foot to see stuff that isn't there! ps. When I've taken pictures from that area I've crossed at aldwych and walked down the reservation ... much safer ;-)
Indeed, and thanks - you are quite right re safety and I have reworded the bit I added to the article to try to take account of this and make it very clear. I certainly agree that we don't want people wandering down there to have a look ... <gulp> ... not a good Road Safety Moment! --Nevilley 09:50, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Northern Heights walk July 4th

[edit]

I wondered if you knew about this - someone just mailed it to me. Guided walk along the track, see http://uk.geocities.com/royjohnson_nlts@btinternet.com/nhw2.htm - sadly I can't go but it sounds interesting. Apparently the bloke has written a book about it too. --Nevilley 11:20, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Interesting! I've walked the track a few times (I live very near and feel it should re-open if possible to relieve pressure on the northern line) but can't go on that date either (and to pay a fiver seems wrong somehow! It is only a single-zone journey ;-) VampWillow 12:24, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)
<lol> (re fare) --Nevilley 13:41, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

World cities

[edit]

Hi VampWillow. I've been moving pages from Category:World Cities to Category:World cities to conform the title, then saw your username on Wikipedia:Categorization in relation to this. If you have ideas about the use of this category, could you put them on Category:World cities? How do you think it should differ from Category:Cities & it's other sub-categories? --Zigger 20:19, 2004 Jun 17 (UTC)

The term World Cities seems to be sued by the media as a description of about 20-30 major cities worldwide; the ones they always have in some list or other on 'quality of life' or 'number of international banks' or somesuch. Seemed to me a sensible categorisation to have available therefore. (dup'd to Category talk:World cities) --VampWillow 21:03, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Markup

[edit]

elements cross-posted

Err, whut? I assume you're talking about United Kingdom; the edit that I reverted was by User:Kjspahis, and was not about a space between a heading and its first paragraph (which is what the text you refer to, err, refers to), but one betwixt a paragraph and an info-box; without the blank line, the two quite seperate parts of the article get somewhat comingled, I feel. It's a terribly minor point, though. James F. (talk) 15:29, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Er ... I went by your name and that summary. Maybe it is just I keep finding pages with spaces after headings that I'm seeing them everywhere!. Info-boxes are, of course, an entirely separate mess ;-) --VampWillow 17:47, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Ilford

[edit]

Good job, merging the two articles. I completely missed it on [Talk:Ilford, London|the Talk: page] and it hadn't occurred to me to do it myself, despite the ", London" suffix pissing me off. Thank you! :o) — OwenBlacker 20:18, Jun 20, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks! I was checking a totally different link then realised something didn't make sense. Although Ilford (film) was known world-wide (:: ponders if FP4 and HP5 should have entries ::) all but a couple of the links were actually for the town. I've been removing quite a few superfluous ", London" suffixes tonight too. --VampWillow 20:24, 20 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Old Street Challenge

[edit]

Hi VW, I am very disappointed that you have not yet taken me up on my bet! :) (See Old St Stn up there ^ somewhere.) Have you had any luck with this topic yet? I had an email back from a transport history guy who thought there were no original buildings left but could not cite any source, chiz chiz. He did have some slightly more complex argument about where the emergency stairs come up - apparently they come up in the present station and because they are unlikely to have been moved this perhaps points towards the station still being in its original location, he tells me. However this is not proof. It also occured to me that the roundabout was of course not there originally, so if the station was (as many [but not all!] are) at the road junction, it might have been quite central on the present roundabout, whereas the "red building" is a little way up the road from where the junction would presumably have been. (All this is assuming the road alignments have not shifted too much so the roundabout is pretty well centred on the old crossroads - hmmmm I wonder if this is a safe assumption? See for example http://users.bathspa.ac.uk/greenwood/map_c7u.html ) However this too is not proof! I'm still working on it ... regards, --Nevilley 08:39, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)

bit puzzled as I'm sure I posted a reply here earlier today, however the interweb seems to be behaving a bit odd at the moment so I shalln't get upset about its disappearance... I'm happy to accept the bet (even if I am wrong!) but if anything the presence of the emergency stairs being within the present station might actually benefit my assertion as with other stations (eg. Camden Town iirc) they are not always integrated with the station. In my map collection there was a very old and highly detailed one of Hackney which, iirc, included Old Street,, but it has gone AWOL at the moment so I shall have to keep searching for evidence (one way or the other). --VampWillow 15:08, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Thanks! :) --Nevilley 18:31, 21 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I found a picture! - see the article talk page. I was bored in Kentish Town for 30 mins on my way to a meeting so popped in to the library and it was almost the first book I picked up. I am going to see if I can see the original and maybe get a copy although goodness knows what the copyright situation will be and whether they'd let me use it. I can email you a lousy scan of my copy of the pic if you like but I don't want to post it here given the low quality and the copyright question. Regards, --Nevilley 09:23, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Gambling

[edit]

Thanks for the deletion of the advertisement in Gambling. I went through all the external links and I think I eliminated the online casinos. Although none of the sites I left in offer gambling, some are commercial, so some people might argue for deleting them, too. I thought they made appropriate external links because they'd be kept up-to-date about specific online gambling sites, something Wikipedia shouldn't try to cover. Does that seem reasonable to you? (I ask because I'm not completely clear on the policy toward such external links.) JamesMLane 00:25, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Seems fair enough to me; links (imho) from WP should be primarily to other informational sites and not be primarily linking-as-advertising. --VampWillow 00:29, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Samois

[edit]

Hi VM -- The source for SAMOIS being disbanded and then replaced by a group called "The Outcasts" is Gayle Rubin in "From the Past: The Outcasts" from the newsletter of Leather Archives & Museum No. 4, April 1998 as quoted on Datenschlag's time line at http://www.datenschlag.org/dachs/dachs1980_1989.html (in German). Gayle goes on to say that the Outcats disband in 1997. Seems we have a conflict of good sources here, or Pat is including the Outcasts as Samois. Should we put in a couple of lines with both versions until we figure out which one is right?

BTW, I can't seem to find an entry for Pat Califia or Patrick Califia, which I find hard to believe. Do you know of any reason? I know he's pretty sick (at least his web page http://www.patcalifia.com/ says so), but shouldn't there be an entry? Cheers Wolf
I'd been meaning to start an article on Califia for some time, so have made a first stab at one at Patrick Califia (though all the re-directs are in place too). I'll use some of his website to update current events. Thanks! --VampWillow 10:41, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

That doesn't tally with the bio linked to from his official site[3], which happily says 'He came out as a lesbian in 1971'. Morwen - Talk 11:59, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

See talk page on Patrick for response and further discussion... I'm also going by the books too. --VampWillow 12:02, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I just love the part about Canada. Nice article! Wolf Deunan 23:42, Jun 22, 2004 (UTC)
ahuh ... When Macho Sluts first came out in the UK it was in a sealed wrapper (with a free badge/pin) and the shops that did stock it (few) would only sell it to women. It was, I beleive, an import problem here too. Thanks! --VampWillow 23:49, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Willow

[edit]

Hi VM -- Was looking at the discussion on the Willow Rosenberg entry and guess which name I found? Another interest in common. Next thing, we can set up a page about BDSM jokes in Buffy ... Wolf Deunan 21:49, Jun 22, 2004 (UTC)

ahuh ... I have a large piccy of her up on my wall (and at my age too!) but yes, there was also quite a bit of BDSM in BtVS and Angel too .. nice, isn't it! --VampWillow 22:40, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)
And while I was up when I should have been in bed, I created a stub of an entry for Doppelgängland. Given its importance for Willow's lesbian side, I'd be grateful if you could take a look at it at some point to see if I got everything right. Acutally, this was just a stupid excuse to watch Willow run around in leather again.. Wolf Deunan 23:31, Jun 22, 2004 (UTC)
For that you need an excuse? There was, of course, also a second episode with, uh, 'me' in too of course ;-) Will take a look at it in the morning ... --VampWillow 23:38, 22 Jun 2004 (UTC)

On a similar note of "I can't quite do it myself", I've just created a stub entry for Hush and realised that I totally neglected to make any reference to Willow meeting Tara (look, I'm a poof, ok? ;o)  D'ya wanna take a look at that one in the morning too, please? — OwenBlacker 00:49, Jun 23, 2004 (UTC)

Compliments, and a question

[edit]

Hi Willow. Not sure our paths have crossed in detail, but I'd seen you around and liked your editing style, so I had a look through your contributions and was again impressed with what I saw. Would you be interested in adminship? And would you have any objection to my nominating you? -- ALargeElk | Talk 13:30, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

(in order ;-) Hi 2U2, have noted you too (and keep being reminded of the elk in the opening titles to Northern Exposure!), thankyou, yes, no - I would be happy to accept - thanks!. --VampWillow 14:09, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Done - awaiting your acceptance. Good luck! -- ALargeElk | Talk 14:30, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Counting

[edit]

Are you going to keep that up forever? ;) Morwen - Talk 14:27, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Why not! It is nice to set oneself a challenge occasionally (like four new articles a day when editing) so one needs to keep track. Given that I have all my records, tapes, CDs, books, DVDs classified and indexed it is the sort of person I am! ;-P --VampWillow 14:31, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)
